Radio Academy awards Surprise Fellowships

Radio professionals Jo Whiley, Vanessa Feltz, Trevor Nelson, Nicky Campbell, Pete Price, Alan Brazil and Barry Cryer have been inducted to the Radio Academy Hall of Fame. They were all honoured at the Radio Academy Hall of Fame lunch, which took place today at the Savoy Hotel in London. BBC Radio 1 Controller Ben Cooper was given surprise a Fellowship, along with UTV’s Scott Taunton and BBC presenter Fi Glover. Absolute Radio presenter and host of the event, Christian O’Connell, also got a surprise by being entered in to the Hall of Fame.

Global to launch Heart Extra and more digital stations

A host of new digital stations are set to launch in the new year by Global, including a sister-station for Heart. Heart Extra will launch on Digital One, the national DAB multiplex, where Global says it has done a deal for extra ‘significant’ capacity. There are currently more than a dozen stations on Digital One, and is at full capacity, so it is not known at this point where the extra space will be found without current stations leaving. The first new service, Smooth Extra, launches on December 27th and is a replacement for Smooth Radio (Smooth Xmas) which is available on most local multiplexes in the UK.

Magic Radio has enlisted the talent of John Barrowman, Christine Bleakley and Claire Sweeney for a series of new shows following its launch on DAB radio on 5 January. FM radio approaching its ‘tipping point’ before digital takes over, says culture minister

The day when the FM radio signal will be switched off is drawing nearer, the Government indicated, after the UK reached a “tipping point” in the conversion to Digital radio. The names Southend Radio and Chelmsford Radio are to disappear to make way for Radio Essex on FM. Radio Essex has been simulcasting the output of the two local stations (which already share all programming) on DAB, but from Monday 23rd March all three will become one.

Virgin Radio set for comeback on new Sound Digital platform

Virgin Radio is to return to the UK airwaves, along with three spin-off talkSPORT stations and a host of new nationwide broadcasters as part of a new wave of digital radio stations. Sound Digital, owned by TalkSport parent UTV Media, Absolute Radio owner Bauer Media and transmission company Arqiva, beat a rival bid from Listen2Digital to own a new D2 transmitter. The new stations are expected to launch in March next year and will see around a doubling of the national digital stations currently available on digital audio broadcasting radio.

Big increase in cars with DAB digital radio

The latest figures for cars with DAB as standard is up from 50% to 61% in the last 12 months. In the last year nearly 1.5 million of new cars registered in the UK have had digital radio fitted as standard. In the first three months of 2015 the percentage of all cars sold with digital radio as standard was 61.1%, a significant increase from 50.4% in Q1 2014 and 35.4% in Q1 2013.

In today’s Advertising Association/WARC report for 2014, radio quietly blazed a trail as the best performing traditional media, up 7.2%, notes the RAB’s Lucy Barrett. “It is great news that in 2014 UK advertising spend grew at its highest rate since 2010.
