Commercial radio has more listeners than the BBC

Plus a whole set of digital stations post results for the first time!

Here are the radio listening headlines from the RAJAR release for Q2 2016. All statistics are for weekly listening unless otherwise stated.

Commercial radio has overtaken the BBC in terms of weekly reach, now delivering 35.5million listeners.

48.7million (9 out of 10) adults listen to radio every week, with 73% of adults listening to commercial radio.

This quarter shows the first set of figures following the launch of the UK’s second digital multiplex. Of the new stations on D2, Virgin Radio recorded the highest reach, with 409,000 listeners. The other new D2 stations reported as follows: Mellow Magic380,000 listeners, TalkSPORT2 – 285,000 listeners, Magic Chilled – 233,000 listeners and talkRADIO – 224,000 listeners.

The networked stations continue to deliver high reach with listening figures in the millions; Heart 8.9m, Capital Brand 8.5m, Smooth Brand 5.6m, Kiss 5.5m, and, Absolute 4.3m.

Capital still remains at the top spot as London's most popular station with 2.26m listeners, whilst Kiss remains in second place with 2.1m people tuning in. Heart has overtaken Magic for third place with 1.7m and LBC 97.3 has jumped up to take the 5th spot with 1.2m. Clyde 1 remains the most listened to commercial station in Scotland with 643,000 weekly listeners and in Northern Ireland, Cool FM has 387,000 weekly listeners. In Wales, Heart South Wales is number 1 with 460,000 listeners.

Dave Berry, George and Lilah on Capital FM are the most listened to breakfast show in London reaching 1.13 million listeners. Kiss (Ricky, Melvin and Charlie) took second place with 921,000 listeners and LBC moved up to nab third place with an impressive 741,000 listeners.

45.3% of all listening is via digital platforms, with 58.9% of the population now tuning in digitally every week. The largest proportion of digital listening is via DAB radio with 32.2% of all listening hours.

Absolute 80s tops the digital-only station race increasing to 1.58m, with Kisstory not far behind, delivering 1.54m listeners. Planet Rock has dipped after a great quarter in Q1 to 986,000 keeping the top 3 digital-only stations Bauer heavy.
