Commercial Radio Listening Remains Strong

“Old Skool” and 80’s music continues to top the digital-only commercial station chart

Here are the radio listening headlines from the RAJAR release for Q4 2017. All statistics are for weekly listening unless otherwise stated.

48.9 million (90%) adults listen to radio every week, and 65% of adults listen to commercial radio.

Commercial Radio continues to stay in front of the BBC for yet another quarter with a weekly reach of 35.5 million. The BBC’s figures have increased very slightly since last quarter, now with a weekly reach of 35m.

The networked stations have again delivered a large reach , as listening figures have continued to stay well into the millions; Heart Brand 9.2m, Capital Brand 8.3m, Kiss Network 5.6m, Smooth Brand 5.5m, Absolute Network 4.7m and, Magic Network 3.7m.

Heart, Capital, Kiss and Smooth have all decreased listenership ever so slightly, but it’s good news for Bauer as the Absolute Network and Magic Network has continued to increase its reach this quarter.

Capital continues to be London’s most popular commercial station yet again with 2.1m listeners, beating Kiss (2m) to the top spot for the fourth quarter in a row. Magic has just held on to third place (1.56m) followed by Heart with 1.55 million listeners.

Clyde 1 remains the most listened to commercial radio station in Scotland with 514,000 weekly listeners, followed by Capital Scotland with 495,000 listeners. In Northern Ireland, Cool FM has increased it’s listenership again this quarter by 8,000 listeners, now reaching 503,000 weekly listeners.

In the battle of the breakfast shows, Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp has fallen to second place in London (1.01m listeners) as Kiss Breakfast with Ricky, Melvin and Charlie takes the crown! Kiss have not had the top London breakfast show spot since this time last year (Q4,16), increasing their listenership quarter on quarter by 127,000 - taking them over the 1 million mark again.

Kiss remain as the biggest Breakfast show nationally as well, with over 2.2 million weekly listeners across the country. The Absolute Radio Network follows in second place with 2.1 million weekly listeners.

Digital figures continue to increase at a steady pace with 34 million people (62% of the population) now tuning in to radio every week via a digitally enabled receiver (DAB, Online/App and Digital TV).

In an average week, digital listening accounts for 518 million hours. DAB has the largest share, with 73%/377 million hours followed by Online – 17%/88 million hours and DTV – 10%/ 53 million hours.
In the Digital-only charts, Kisstory continues to lead the way with 1.7m weekly listeners,(slightly down from 1.8m last quarter). 80s music continues to be the most popular music decade of choice, with Absolute 80s (1.5m) and Heart 80s (1.16m) nabbing second and third place, respectively.
Looking at how we listen, 26% of adults listen to radio via a mobile phone or tablet once a month. This figure increases to 35% when looking at people aged 15-24.
