RAJAR Q&A for Q3 2015 from RadioWorks »

What did we think of this quarter's RAJAR results?

Our Insight team answer 7 questions on this quarter's results

View the headlines here.

1. What will RAJAR Q3 2015 be remembered for?

Kiss taking the number one spot in London for only the second time in the station’s history, the first time was only back in February so Kiss looks to be solidifying its position as one of radio’s big players. With over 2 million listeners the station even beats the London figures of BBC Radio 1, which will no doubt please the bosses.

2. Which radio station is your RAJAR hero?

Although Capital Xtra reached 1 million listeners for the first time they’re not my RAJAR hero, instead I’m going for Sunrise Radio.

Sunrise Radio, the Asian station which currently covers London, is up a whopping 50% quarter on quarter and now delivers 316,000 weekly listeners. The station is also due to ‘go national’ in the first half of next year and it’s sure to continue its listener growth.

3. Which stations have surprised you this quarter?

XFM (will be Radio X)

In September XFM rebranded to Radio X but we have to wait for the next set of figures, released in February, to see how the new station, with Moyles et al, performs. As a network the station posted an improved reach of just over 1 million (up 17% Q on Q). Good results, the surprise for me was not the overall results but the performance of XFM Scotland which delivered a 41% increase in reach. A shame then that the station has been closed down and the license handed back to Ofcom – all as a part of the Radio X rebrand.

(NOTE: Radio X now has networked programming across the UK and is available on FM in London and Manchester, with National DAB and online coverage)

4. How would you describe digital radio's results?

Great, again! 41.9% of all listening is now digital. And a whopping 30 million people tune in to radio via a digitally enabled device (DAB, DTV, Online) every week.

Absolute Radio 80s, Kisstory and Smooth Extra are the top three digital only commercial radio stations in the UK, and, as a group Bauer Radio are leading the way with four stations in the top five.

Next week we’ll be at the ‘Radio’s Digital Countdown’ event to hear from speakers including MP Ed Vaizey and Bauer’s MD Dee Ford. It’s sure to be a buoyant morning as we look ahead to the launch, early next year, of the new D2 transmitter that sees new stations like talkRADIO, Magic Mellow and Virgin Radio enter the fray. You can catch up with the latest news from the event via our tweets (@radiospecialist) and industry newsletter.

5. What about the notorious London Breakfast Show battle?

Dave and Lisa on Capital FM have retained the number one breakfast show spot in London and they’re ahead by quite some distance despite a slight drop in reach. The pair delivers 980,000 listeners to their show which airs between 6 and 10am, Monday-Friday. Magic, Kiss, LBC and Heart all follow behind with Kiss and LBC moving up compared to last quarter.

6. What is your favourite fact this quarter?

30% of adult Social Media Users claim to receive updates about their favourite Radio Station/Presenter, this increases to 42% when looking at 15-24s.

7. To close, describe RAJAR Q3 2015 in one sentence?

A positive quarter for commercial radio on the whole with an additional 700,000 listeners being added year on year.
