1. What will RAJAR Q4 2015 be remembered for?

Everyone talking about Radio X’s first RAJAR!

The hotly anticipated first set of figures showed a 16.8% quarter on quarter increase since the re-brand for the network, delivering 1.2million weekly listeners.

The much talked about Chris Moyles breakfast show reaches 671,000 listeners every week. A strong increase across the network of 42%, and an increase in London of 38%.

2. Which radio station is your RAJAR hero?

Capital Xtra.

After posting 1 million listeners for the first time last quarter, the station has increased again to deliver 1.2 million listeners, beating the BBC’s Radio 1Xtra. We’ve also been checking out the new ‘My Capital Xtra’ app, and think it is pretty cool!

Smooth Radio London also deserves a mention, as they delivered 800,000 listeners – their highest ever reach.

3. Which stations have surprised you this quarter?

Panjab Radio.

The station has been broadcasting for over 15 years, and now has a weekly listenership of 77,000 - up 40% quarter on quarter. There’s a lot happening at the station, which is due to launch on the new national multiplex from the 29th February and has recently agreed a deal to air on DAB in places as far flung as Berlin and Oslo.

Planet Rock and LBC have also surprised us. Since moving to a digital only transmitter this quarter, Planet Rock has secured 1.1 million listeners, whilst LBC have now taken the top spot in London, in terms of share of listening.

4. How would you describe digital radio's results?

Listening to radio via a digital platform, when measured in terms of weekly reach, now exceeds over half (56%) of the UK adult population.

Absolute Radio 80s, Kisstory and Planet Rock are the top three digital only commercial radio stations in the UK. Each station has well over a million listeners, which will no doubt make owners Bauer Media very happy!

The new D2 transmitter sees a portfolio of stations launching over the next two months as the transmitter gets switched on, on February 29th. You can catch up on the full station line up and the latest audio news in our weekly industry newsletter.

5. What about the notorious Breakfast Show battle?

The Christian O’Connell Show, which broadcasts across the Absolute Radio Network, has posted a record 1.2 million listeners. The show, which uses technology to play different songs on each Absolute station, whilst keeping the speech the same, is now the largest commercial national breakfast show.

Over at the BBC, Chris Evans’ Radio 2 breakfast show reaches a whopping 9.2 million listeners ever week – that’s 17.6% of the population!

In the London commercial battle, Dave Berry on Capital FM has retained the number one breakfast show spot, now passing the 1 million mark! Magic, Kiss, Heart and LBC all follow behind in terms of reach.

6. What is your favourite fact this quarter?

Commercial radio is at an all-time high, which is fantastic news!

This RAJAR has seen commercial radio beating BBC Radio for the first time in terms of reach since 2000, with 35.1 million weekly listeners – this is its highest ever!

7. Finally, how did the newly reporting stations get on?

There were 3 new reporting stations this quarter, two in London and one national.

Mi-Soul, founded by Gordon Mack and Martin Strivens who launched the Kiss FM brand started Mi-Soul over three years ago as an online radio station and moved to DAB in London last summer. Their first set of results has shown a listenership of 29,000.

UCB 1 - United Christian Broadcasters is available online and on national DAB delivering 236,000 listeners every week. In the past, UCB 1 haven’t carried paid for advertising, however we will be interested to see if this changes now that they have RAJAR figures to trade on.
