May 2017 RadioWorks Blog
We love a birthday here at RadioWorks, and this year we have two big radio station birthdays on both a national and local level with Classic FM turning 25 and Sun FM in Sunderland turning 20!
Yesterday, Sun FM hosted a 20th birthday party in the centre of Sunderland where fans could win numerous prizes on the day. Live entertainment was also provided in the form of local bands and musicians, with the headline act being Aston Merrygold from JLS.
Classic FM, which turns 25 on 7th September 2017 is also celebrating in style throughout 2017 with a series of special concerts and events. To mark a quarter of a century of playing nothing but the very best classical music, the station is looking to the future, and some of the outstanding musical talent across the UK. After announcing a 25th Birthday Commissions competition earlier this year in partnership with the Royal Philharmonic Society, seven young composers, all aged under 25, have written a new piece of classical music to mark the station’s birthday.
Each composer has been allocated an event at which their piece will be premiered. These events include The Welsh Proms and Classic FM’s 25th Birthday Celebration with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. The young composers will be paid professional rates for their work, which will be recorded live and broadcast to Classic FM’s 5.3 million listeners throughout the UK.
