Jan 2021 Radio News
More of us than ever have turned to the radio to find comfort during the most challenging of years.
It’s impossible to find an area of life that hasn’t been affected by coronavirus and it’s even more difficult to find something that’s changed for the better. But while the entertainment world has struggled, with sets shut down and release schedules ripped up, one corner of the industry is having a boom (no pun-intended) worth celebrating.
With commutes and days in the office a distant memory for most, thousands of us have sought laughter, companionship and explanations of WTF is going on by turning on the radio. Our favourite hosts feel like colleagues and they’ve delivered uplifting moments when we’ve needed them most.
Amazon just announced that it’s acquiring Wondery, the network behind podcasts including “Dirty John” and “Dr. Death.”
Wondery will become part of Amazon Music, which added support for podcasts (including its own original shows) in September. At the same time, the announcement claims that “nothing will change for listeners” and that the network’s podcasts will continue to be available from “a variety of providers.”
DJ and producer Charlie Powell is joining Global as the new host of The Capital Weekender overnights.
The former KISS and KISS FRESH host will be on-air from tomorrow every Saturday and Sunday from 1.30am till 5am and Monday afternoons on Capital Dance 4pm – 7pm.
Clare Teal, who hosted her final show on BBC Radio 2 this week, is joining Jazz FM.
Clare announced she was leaving Radio 2 in November, and did her last programme on January 3rd 2021.
Now Jazz FM’s breakfast presenter Nigel Williams has announced the broadcaster is joining the national jazz station to present big band and swing every Sunday night for two hours on The Clare Teal Show.
