Digital Audio giant, Spotify goes for the hattrick with its third Podcast company purchase this year; following the acquisition of Anchor and Gimlet Media. The streaming service acquires the true crime podcast firm, Parcast in its quest to “becoming the world’s leading audio platform.”
True Crime is emerging as a popular podcast genre, with hits ‘Serial’ and ‘Dirty John’ which has captured millions of dedicated listeners. Now Spotify is putting their detective hat on, purchasing Parcast.
The podcast network specialises in creating hit true crime and mystery shows including ‘Cults’, ‘Serial Killers’ and ‘Conspiracy Theories’. Interestingly this genre attracts mostly women and over seventy-five percent of Parcast’s audience is female.
This move (rumoured to have cost Spotify $100m) reflects Spotify’s $500m quest to become podcast leaders and generate exciting content for listeners with a thirst for True Crime.
