Nielsen’s US mid-year music report has revealed that audio streams have nearly doubled since the first 6 months of 2015.
Highlights from the report show that:
• Audio surpassed video as the top format for on-demand streaming, with a share growing from 44% in H1 2015 to 54% in H1 2016.
• In the same period of 2015, audio had accumulated 57.5 billion streams. Audio streams skyrocketed up to 113.6 billion streams for the first half of 2016.
• Total digital music consumption increased 14.8% between the first halves of 2015 and 2016. All digital sources counted by Nielsen include digital albums, track equivalent albums, and on-demand streaming equivalent albums.
Although these figures relate to our friends across the pond, it’s clear that audio streaming in the UK is also going from strength to strength – for example a recent TNS study found that Spotify’s free service now reaches close to 17 per cent of the UK listening audience.
