Commercial radio has increased its listener share on the BBC, claiming 43.9% of all listening hours up 0.6% year on year. Commercial radio continues to dominate the BBC on a local level, with 27.4 million listeners as opposed to the BBC’s 9.26 million. | |
9 out of 10 people continue to listen to radio every week. In terms of reach, 51% of the population tune in digitally every week, up 13% year on year. | |
Newly launched brand extension Kisstory recorded a strong start with 854,000 weekly listeners, with Kiss UK itself up 16.5% quarter on quarter. First the first time, Kiss UK now reaches over 5 million listeners. | |
In London, looking at weekly reach, Capital FM has maintained its number one spot delivering 2.17 million listeners, up 8.6% year on year. Kiss also retained in their position in second place and Magic 105.4 are up 4.9% quarter on quarter putting it in third place ahead of Heart London. | |
Digital-only Absolute 80s has continued to perform well, increasing its listeners 35.5% year on year to 1.2 million. Absolute’s other digital stations (excluding Absolute Radio) are also up year on year 22%. | |
Dave Berry and Lisa Snowdon have retained their crown as the King and Queen of breakfast amongst the commercial radio stations in London, with their show on Capital London now reaching 1.1 million listeners (6-10am, Monday – Friday). |

1. What will RAJAR Q3 2013 be remembered for? |
It’s a set of figures that reflect good year on year results, but perhaps not quarter on quarter – nevertheless the summer months are always somewhat down. Digital listening is up 13% year on year with 51% of radio listeners accessing radio via a digital platform.
Station-wise, Kiss UK will be delighted with their figures as they now reach over 5 million listeners for the first time and they will be especially pleased with the first RAJAR figures for new brand extension Kisstory, which reported 854,000 weekly listeners. |

5. What about the notorious London Breakfast Show battle? | |
Kiss FM with Rickie, Melvin and Charlie (6 – 9am) are up from 3rd to 2nd but the biggest leap in position was with Nick Ferrari on talk-only station LBC 97.3 (7 – 10am) who have gone from 6th place last quarter and now claim third spot. Heart London with Emma Bunton and Jamie Theakston (6 – 9am) are just 7,000 listeners behind in fourth place and Neil Fox on Magic 105.4 (5 – 9am) a very close 5th. Outside of commercial radio, Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw (6 – 10am) is down once again, losing 300,000 weekly listeners this quarter. |
